Not Just Another Trend
In 2009, it was said that the donut was going to be the new cupcake trend. If this was a trend, I think it would have fallen off the popularity bandwagon a long time ago. I enjoy how fun they are, how unique artisans can be with their choice of colors and recipes, and how loyal customers become so happy when they have one. Sure, donuts fattening, but as long as you don’t eat five in one sitting, it’s all going to be okay.
I’ve been absolutely salivating for probably a year and a half over Blackbird Donuts on Tremont Street in Boston’s South End. What is the reason why I haven’t gone in all of that time? Well, to be honest, the huge reason is parking. Knowing that most of that part of the city is resident parking only, going there on an early Sunday morning provides you a higher probability of finding side street parking. What luck! That’s exactly what happened for me! I headed right around the block (in a hurry, I might add) to Blackbird. I stepped in and the shop was quite tiny, but so welcoming. The smell of freshly baked donuts and coffee smacks you in the face and I enjoyed that much more than the cold New England weather outside. Decor was charming and fitting with their “blackbird” theme. The counter staff were very friendly and attentive. I ordered my coffee and five (yes, FIVE) donuts that were packed neatly in their famous pizza box.
Now, you’re probably saying, “why on Earth would she order five if she just said earlier as long as you don’t eat five in one sitting, it’s all going to be okay. Is it really going be okay? Well, is it?!” Yes, do not fret. I wanted to make sure I got a variety to try and experience. Heck, I figured if I’d waited this long to go there, I might as well get what I wanted. Let me tell you that I do not regret that life choice! I did not intend to stuff all of those delicious bites of heaven in my face when I got home because I wanted to savor each one today AND tomorrow.
What kinds should you try? Well, I’d suggest checking out Blackbird Donuts on social media and also checking out their website because their flavors are always changing. Today I tried marshmallow coconut, chocolate sprinkle, mint chocolate chip cake, mocha chocolate, and vanilla glazed. Their coffee is also amazing, too. I love shops like this that aren’t corporate and mainstream. Promote local shops and spread the word about them! Market for them through word of mouth. Help them be successful! Donut you agree?
